Myself as a Beekeeper
1959 | Oil on Linen | 48x30 (approx.)
Private Collection

Artist Notes:
A take-off on Watteau's Gilles, in the Louvre.
Gilles, the clown figure in the Commedia dell'Arte.
I thought I could emulate my grandfather, a great warrior, long distance runner, and company commander of the 4th Infantry Regiment, NJNG. He kept bees.
After getting stung any number of times & having to dress myself as in the painting, I realized that I was more of a clown than my rock-steady grandfather.
